REACH: Greater transparency - improved protection REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. The new EU Chemicals Regulation entered into force on 1st of June 2007 (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006) and replaced the Chemicals Regulation which had been valid up till that point. The important aims of this new EU chemicals policy are to guarantee a higher level of protection against potential risks of substances with respect to human health and the environment. Enterprises will have to prove that the substances, which they produce or import to the EU and place on the market, are not harmful to human health or the environment. Manufacturers or importers must have sufficient data on the substances’ properties (physical-chemical properties, properties considered as causing risk to health, environmental behavior) and make a safety assessment for any application of the substance. Depending on the hazardous nature of a material property, the substances will be subject to authorization. Applications may be restricted or even forbidden. |
