REACH: Greater transparency - improved protection

REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. The new EU Chemicals Regulation entered into force on 1st of June 2007 (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006) and replaced the Chemicals Regulation which had been valid up till that point. The important aims of this new EU chemicals policy are to guarantee a higher level of protection against potential risks of substances with respect to human health and the environment. Enterprises will have to prove that the substances, which they produce or import to the EU and place on the market, are not harmful to human health or the environment. Manufacturers or importers must have sufficient data on the substances’ properties (physical-chemical properties, properties considered as causing risk to health, environmental behavior) and make a safety assessment for any application of the substance. Depending on the hazardous nature of a material property, the substances will be subject to authorization. Applications may be restricted or even forbidden.

All substances in the products supplied to our customers have been successfully pre-registered. Furthermore, all substances in the materials imported into the EU, necessary for our production processes, have been pre-registered. The supply continuity for our customers is guaranteed.

III. Status Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG

In close cooperation with voestalpine and our suppliers, Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG is making all efforts to facilitate and simplify the introduction of REACH for our customers.  Our customers will be able to take advantage of planning reliability and of a continuous availability of products complying with REACH.  Continued analyses show the effects of REACH on our products.  We immediately inform our customers once any relevant changes are made.  The safety data sheet under Reach is after all the most important means to convey safety information on chemical products.  In some specific cases data from safety assessment for chemical substances in our products will be added.  Some of these data will be available in a number of years because registration deadlines will not expire before 2018.

Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG will be compliant within the timescales specified and can ensure that its raw material supplies and manufactured products meet the regulatory requirements.

IV. Substances of very high concern (SVHC)

We are aware of the current candidate list published by ECHA and we monitor the further proposals of the Member States. We can confirm that none of our substances (as such, in preparations or articles) is mentioned in the current candidate list.
